At your Students' Union we’re working to tackle period poverty. No student should forgo necessities such as menstrual products, resources, or education due to financial hardship. This is why we are providing free pads and tampons to any student who gets a period.
Our period poverty campaign began in 2017 with Keldyne Wilson (Activities Leader). Keldyne completed a report on student’s experiences of period poverty and researched into student’s experiences on our campus, including what we could do to improve this. With this report, she secured a stock of period products to be provided to students to help prevent Northumbria students experiencing period poverty.
Since 2021, Grace Armstrong (former Welfare Leader) worked in partnership with the university staff to make this service accessible to the wider student body. Providing products across the city campus, coach lane campus and London campus.
We envision students face the same problem but on a greater scale, which is why we are constantly working on tackling these problems before they arise. We’re also conscious of the environmental effects included in the use of period products, which is why we’re constantly researching into different resources for those who menstruate that also benefit the environment more than the usual methods.
You can find pads and tampons in all bathrooms at the Students’ Union and across your campus.
We now offer eco friendly options for students which are free to order. We have reusable pads which come with a leak proof bag and wash bag. We also have menstrual cups in 2 sizes.
